The best way to clean your tile and grout as a homeowner

Cleaning tile and grout can be challenging, but with the right methods, you can restore their appearance. Here's the best approach to clean your tile and grout effectively:

1. Gather Supplies:

  • Baking soda

  • White vinegar

  • Hydrogen peroxide (optional)

  • Mild dish soap

  • Warm water

  • Scrub brush or an old toothbrush

  • Microfiber cloth or mop

  • Spray bottle

2. Prepare the Cleaning Solution:

  • For Light Cleaning: Mix a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water in a spray bottle. This solution is great for everyday cleaning.

  • For Deep Cleaning: Create a paste using baking soda and water. If you need extra cleaning power, mix baking soda with hydrogen peroxide instead.

3. Apply the Cleaning Solution:

  • Light Cleaning: Spray the soap solution onto the tile and grout, then let it sit for 5 minutes.

  • Deep Cleaning: Apply the baking soda paste directly onto the grout lines. For tougher stains, you can spray vinegar over the baking soda paste (this will fizz, which helps lift stains).

4. Scrub the Grout:

  • Use a scrub brush or an old toothbrush to scrub the grout. Focus on stained or dirty areas.

  • For deep cleaning, scrub the baking soda paste after it has fizzed and worked on the stains for about 10-15 minutes.

5. Rinse and Wipe:

  • Rinse the area with warm water to remove any residue.

  • Wipe down the tiles with a microfiber cloth to remove excess water and soap.

  • For a thorough clean, you can mop the floor with clean water.

6. Sealing the Grout (Optional):

  • After the grout is thoroughly clean and dry, apply a grout sealer to protect it from future stains and make cleaning easier.

7. Regular Maintenance:

  • Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove dirt and debris.

  • Clean spills immediately to prevent staining.

  • Use a mild cleaner and water for weekly maintenance.

This method should help keep your tiles and grout clean and in good condition.

How to get pen marks out of the upholstery

When upholstery cleaning in Utah County, we run into ink marks on the upholstery all the time. We first use stain magic to the spot, so the ink spot will not blow up and get larger when trying to get the spot out with a solvent like Pro-Solve liquid and Power Gel. Then, we agitate with a bone scraper, carpet shark or a toothbrush with a volatile solvent to loosen up the pen mark. Then we extract with hot water from our truck mount and an upholstery tool. Often, we have to repeat this process until the ink spot is gone. Getting ink marks out of the upholstery can be done if done right, it takes time and patience. Remember this is a polyester sofa and if it is a natural fiber we would have to take a different approach. Using gel solvents helps so the product does not go right through the fabric. Always have plenty of white cotton towels on hand when you are getting ink out of the upholstery. Always test all products on a hidden area of the sofa upholstery before attempting to clean it, to verify that the products you are using won't damage or fade the fabric. Can you see the difference we are making on this upholstery? Give the Jeff and Judy team a call, if you have any questions 801-756-2275.
